Afghanistan
September 11, 2001 needs no introduction. Blind to borders and regardless of politics, its tremors were felt in some way by all of humanity. Thousands of lives were lost in the attacks on New York and Washington , D.C. -and hundreds more were lost as an inevitable side effect of the subsequent bombing campaign in Afghanistan.
In addition, thousands of Afghani refugees were forced to flee their homes to overcrowded and under-stocked refugee camps along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. GlobeMed's Crisis Response Unit was quick to organize a "health kit" drive to collect basic hygiene supplies in an effort to alleviate the refugee crisis. Items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, nail files, adhesive bandages, and washcloths were collected outside local drug stores and organized into dozens of personalized kits. These were then shipped via airplane into Pakistan and then via ground transport to the camps along the border. As with all our shipments, personal contacts in the region ensured the safe delivery of the kits where they were needed most.
