January 17, 2002 saw the eruption of Congo 's extremely active Nyiragongo volcano near Goma. The eruption destroyed thousands of homes, devastated livestock and farmlands, and displaced as many as people. According to www.disasterrelief.org, as much as 35% of Goma was flattened by lava flows, and the nearby water source, Lake Kivu , was threatened with toxicity from volcanic gases. With the tremendous support of Rotary International and Roycemore Academy in Evanston , IL , GlobeMed answered the crisis with a large shipment of health kits.
